The Story Behind Positive Families: Finding Strength in Adversity
The Story Behind Positive Families: Finding Strength in Adversity
If you’ve ever felt like life’s throwing you curveballs that just won’t quit, you’re not alone. My journey started in Melbourne, and while it might’ve looked picture-perfect from the outside—think private schools, a beautiful home, holiday homes, sports cars and a closet filled with the latest fashions —it was anything but ideal behind closed doors.
The ever-present anxiety in my home set the stage for my early experiences with stress. I would brace myself every time my father came home from work, constantly navigating the storm of his unpredictable moods. His explosive temper was something we all learned to avoid, but for me, it left deep emotional wounds. The pressure of living with such intensity at home shaped my inner world in ways I didn’t fully understand until much later.
School didn’t offer much of an escape, either. I endured relentless bullying, with cruel taunts about my weight becoming a daily battle. “Here comes tank”—those words echoed in my head long after I left the school grounds. I became withdrawn, my confidence shattered. High school brought more struggles. Once a driven, ambitious student, I spiralled into depression, and my dreams of becoming a psychologist felt increasingly out of reach. The voice of my inner critic drowned out all hope.
But somewhere inside, a spark remained. Despite the challenges at home and school, I had this fierce entrepreneurial spirit that pushed me to carve out a successful career in fashion. This journey eventually led me to the bustling streets of London, where I began to find my self-worth. As I travelled around England, I started to believe that maybe, just maybe, I was “good enough.” Life seemed to be falling into place—until it wasn’t.
One bright, sunny day in the English countryside, my world was turned upside down by a fatal car accident. The aftermath was a struggle with post-traumatic stress that felt never-ending. Flashbacks, panic attacks, and sleepless nights became my new normal. It wasn’t until I returned to Melbourne and sought psychological support that I began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. This marked the beginning of my deep dive into psychology and a personal transformation that would change my life.
Through this journey of healing, I rediscovered a calling that had always been there —a desire to make a positive impact on others facing similar battles. Six years of intense study, often late into the night while my daughters slept, led me to become a psychologist.
With a heart full of determination and a mission to make a difference, I founded Positive Families—a practice rooted in a positive, strength-based approach to well-being. It’s about flipping the script from merely treating symptoms to promoting overall well-being.
My story isn’t just about surviving adversity; it’s about thriving in spite of it. I’ve walked the path of anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. I know firsthand the transformative power of therapy and the impact it can have on someone’s life. Mental health is a universal challenge, and when we feel seen and supported, that’s where real healing begins.
At the centre of my life is my family—a source of love, inspiration, and sometimes challenge. As a parent, I strive to balance nurturing independence with providing guidance. My personal journey of growth has been deeply shaped by years of meditation practice and a spiritual exploration that began in a Christian household and expanded through Zen Buddhism and Eastern philosophy. Every person’s path is unique, and I find beauty in the diversity of each journey.
And yet, along the way, I have come to realise that while I am grateful for the opportunities and comforts my parents provided to me and my siblings, true worth has nothing to do with material possessions or external success. It’s easy to get caught up in those outward markers, but none of them define who we are. Whether we have much or little, our value comes from within rooted in how we choose to live, the love we give, and the way we show up in the world.
So, I extend this heartfelt invitation to Positive Families—a place where life’s inevitable ups and downs are embraced, and transformed into powerful opportunities for growth, healing, and a brighter future. Because, you are more than enough.
